DEBUT EP "HARMONIA"
Harmonia is the debut album of Iowa-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Katie Sin. The 7-song novella of an album showcases Katie’s eclectic influences, with songs that range from cinematic ballad (“The Reflection of a Streetlight on the Window of a Car”) to vaudevillian country (“The End”).
Through it all, Katie’s songwriting voice stands out, reflecting her unique position as a biracial Korean-American-Chicagoan relocated to rural Iowa. Songs on Harmonia meditate on how place and identity can be varied and fluid rather than fixed, that no one sound or approach can really capture the range of a person’s expression, influences, and pleasures. Harmonia simultaneously embraces the hybrid nature and freedom of today’s music and culture while being solidly grounded in the sounds and sensibilities of yesterday.
In true DIY fashion, Katie Sin played producer, arranger, and art-director for the release. Bringing together Midwestern collaborators from Omaha, Chicago, Minneapolis, and across Iowa, Harmonia was recorded in home studios in Grinnell, Iowa and mixed to tape in Rock Island, Illinois with original Daytrotter engineer Patrick Stolley.
From the lyrics to the liner notes, Harmonia stands for an earnest re-embrace of the term heartland: an inner and outer region of self-expression, creative collaboration, inclusive and affirming community-building, and a sincere desire to be in relationship with history, land, and people.
